I booked my mule deer hunt at our 2006 Convention in Lancaster with one of our Foundation-supporting
outfitter members, Otto Kulm of Pacific Mountain Guides of Valdez, Alaska.
I arrived in Boise, Idaho where Otto met me, but my baggage didn’t make it. So, I visited the newly opened
Cabela’s store and purchased a suit of Camo pants and shirts and a short sleeve Camo tee-shirt since it was
80 degrees. At least I wouldn’t lose the opening day of the season. Also, with Otto when he picked me up
was another Eastern Chapter FNAWS member, David Redding of Pennsylvania, who was also deer hunting
with Otto. We drove into Oregon and up into the mountains. Got settled in, met my guide and his wife, our
camp cook.. Wes and Diane Allison, both great people. Dian’s cooking was super - pork chops, rib eye
steaks, etc. No complaints on that end.
As for the area, we saw bucks everyday any where from 1 to 7 a day. Many, the average hunter would
have shot. I was only looking for one monster which I didn’t get but got his smaller brother, a big high heavy
horned white faced buck. Nice deer. You’ve heard about the big one getting away, well this one I let go..
Had him in my sights, safety off, deer standing broadside at 420 years and guide says don’t shoot. I put the
safety on and lowered the gun. He said the property line is in that area very close, so lets not chance a shot
so close to the line.
It seems they have a problem out there with trespassers on private land. For you guys looking for a big
buck this guy is still there. I estimate him at 195/200 point, 28” wide and high, dark heavy rack. I would go
back next year, but I would probably end up in divorce court - the season runs 2 weeks only and my 50th
anniversary is during that time.
The deer I harvested was probably the 2nd largest in the area that Wes knew of. Nice deer. Hunt was
great except I didn’t know I was going on a sheep hunt.. Thank God I was in good shape or else forget it.
Mountains very steep, average elevation was 5,000 to 7,000 feet. Just be in shape if you’re going.
Wes is probably one of the best guides I’ve ever had. Quiet walking, good eyes, picks up game quite fast.
I would hunt with him again in a a heart beat. Anyone interested look of Otto at our 2008 Eastern Chapter
Convention, or call me anytime on my cell. (203) 410-1841.
