WHITETAIL HUNT IN ALBERTA
By Wes Blakeman - Life Member #3
This past November (2006), I hunted with Stan Eden of Buckstop Guiding an Outfitting from Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada for Whitetail deer.  When I arrived at the airport in Edmonton, I met Eastern Chapter
FNAWS member Mark Bansner of Bansner’s Ultimate  Rifles, then at the hotel I met Dennis Grim, Bill Saiff
and his dad and sons of Bill Saiff Outdoors.  Jerry Miller and wife Cindy, Pat Fredericks of Ameri-Cana
Expeditions, Inc. and others.  I guess at this gathering we could have held an Eastern Chapter meeting.
I can’t say enough about Stan and his partner Don Cherniawski’s operation.  I hunted with both of these
gentlemen.  First Stan and I did quite a bit of driving looking over the area, since I was trying to put a group
of my hunting buddies together for this coming season.  I wanted to get a feel and layout of his area and the
amount of game it has.
We saw a few deer in the 150’s plus class and quite a few in the 140’s or so.  Nothing I was interested in.  I
passed on a couple of nice 5x5’s in the high 150’s and into the middle of 160’s, decided to wait for a closer
look but they stepped into the trees, kicked out a couple does and never returned, that’s hunting.
I passed on a couple of Mulies, that were real nice.  One laying in a field approximately 150/200 yards
away, nice 4x4, wide rack and pretty high.  I would guess him to be 175/180 plus, but I was after mister big
whitetail.  They had seen a deer close to the 200 plus range in the area.  I was hunting so I didn’t want to
waste valuable early morning hunting hours chasing a mule deer, especially since the whitetail was so close
by, and figuring I could always find this guy if I wanted to.  I had seen a real monster Mulie a few days before,
a few miles from here and would rather take him.  Anyway, after all was said and done, I didn’t harvest any
animals, not because I didn’t see any but, none I wanted, but there’s always next year.
At our annual convention in February I booked a combo hunt with Stan and Don, I always like doing
business face to face and it was good to see them again.
