At the June 7, 2003 meeting of the Board of Directors, fourteen (14) Grant-In-Aid
requests were funded. A record number of GIA requests came in to the office
this year totaling more than $145,000.00 We were able to fund a total of
$37,650.00
GIA—2003-1 - New Mexico FNAWS - $4,000.00
This is the fourth year in a row we have partnered with New Mexico FNAWS. The money
we donate goes to pay houndsmen for Cougar removal in the Rocky and Desert Bighorn
Sheep ranges. In return, we received a rifle Elk Hunt from Milligan Brand Outfitting to be
sold at our 2004 Convention.
GIA—2003-2 - Conservation Force - $2500.00
This money to be used by this fine organization on their ongoing Argali lawsuit. This
lawsuit has been going on for the past two years where the anti’s are trying to stop all
importation of any Argali Sheep. This past year Conservation Force was successful in
getting the HSUS ousted from the case.
GIA—2003-3 - U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance -
$2,500.00
One yearly donation to this organization who’s primary emphasis is fighting the ballot
initiatives against hunting that pop up in the elections each year, and the ongoing fight
against the anti’s.
GIA—2003-4 - Ungulate Enhancement Fund - Yukon -
$2,500.00
The money from this fund is used to purchase wolf hides from Yukon trappers in an effort
to create a constant market and price for the trappers to sell their hides. Prior to the
program, the trappers had to rely on what they could receive from the fur auctions, where
the price fluctuates considerably. This fund gives trappers a good reliable source of
income from year to year and also helps control the wolf population in the Yukon.
GIA—2003-5 - The Alaskan Constitutional Legal Defense Conservation Fund -
$1,000.00
Donation for the ongoing lawsuit which is in its final stages on the battle between
subsistence hunting and the taking of Dall Sheep permits from Outfitters.
GIA—2003-6 - Wyoming - Town of Dubois -
$1,250.00
Payment is part of a $10,000.00 project to install a Web cam in the town of Dubois for
public viewing of the largest visible Bighorn Sheep herd in North America
GIA—2003-7 - PA Hunters Sharing The Harvest - $1,000.00
Money to be used for processing of donated venison to be given to needy people
GIA—2003-8 - Wyoming FNAWS - $5,000.00
Payment is part of a $10,000.00 sheep allotment buyout in the Teton Basin Ranger
District of the Caribou –Targhee National Forest. We have participated in many of these
sheep allotment buyouts over the years and they are a great use of our GIA funds.
Domestic sheep and wild sheep cannot coexist in the same area. Death can occur
rapidly to wild sheep when exposed to the domestic sheep. These buyouts of domestic
sheep grazing areas in the wild sheep ranges insure that there will never again be
permits given for domestic sheep grazing in the allotment buyout areas.
GIA—2003-9 - PA Game Commission -
$1,000.00
Funding for two more PICK (Portable Interactive Conservation Kits) which are used in PA
and surrounding states. We have now purchased twelve (12) of these kits. These kits
are used in such big demand by the schools that Dan Lynch who heads this project for
the Game Commission, tells us that there is a waiting list to get one.
GIA—2003-10 - The Alaska Professional Hunter’s Association, Inc. -
$7,000.00
Money to be used by APHA on their ongoing programs to manage wildlife. We are
represented by more Outfitters from Alaska at our convention each year than any other
state or province.
GIA—2003-11 - Camp Compass -
$1,500.00
This program takes inner city youth and exposes them to hunting and fishing while at the
same time requiring them to excel in their schoolwork as well.
GIA—2003-12 - Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation -
$2,500.00
This revenue will be used to cost share a project with a total cost of $38,625.00 to create
high quality forage plots for Elk and other wildlife on private lands within Pennsylvania’s
elk range.
GIA—2003-13 - Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation -

Pennsylvania’s elk range.

$3,000.00
Funding to be given to an institution for ongoing research into curing the various types of
disease that effect our wild sheep populations.
